Earlier this summer, The Hope State released their new track “Just Survive” to great acclaim from the Halfway 2 Nowhere team. The Toronto based band are the latest in a string of Canadian bands to make it onto our playlists and their infectious, honest lyrics in “Just Survive” really caught my attention when I first heard it.
With a mix of influences prevalent on the track from country, to pop, to indie the track actually started as an acoustic number which is clear from the tone and tempo. The lyrics match the melody in perfect harmony and the Canadian rockers have found a sound that fits their musical abilities wonderfully. The soft, honest vocals make for a welcome change compared to the heavier sounds coming out of Canada right now so the band could find themselves taking off if they get picked up by the right people.
The video itself is also raw and true with amazing filmography which brings out the track in the light it really should be (the irony that no false lighting was used at all!). I like this bands ambition; not a perfect entity by any means yet but there are few bands who get it perfect from the off. There is a lot of potential and “Just Survive”, I believe, is just the beginning for this band. Watch this space!
