This year’s Hit The North festival is a huge celebration of music taking place over the first May bank holiday weekend in Newcastle. With three massive opening parties, Meet the North (a day of new artists from the North East and beyond) and the main day on Sunday 6th, the festival is now well established and is going to be a fantastic weekend. We’ve listened to every artist on the lineup and have whittled the list of names down to ten artists you cannot miss this Hit the North, here’s part one featuring five of the best.
Drenge – Friday 4th May – Riverside
2018 finally sees the long anticipated return of Sheffield brother’s Drenge. Following the success of 2015 album Undertow, Drenge are back with their explosive live set, making a stop at Hit The North on their Grand Reopening Tour. We first saw Drenge in 2014 at Benicassim Festival in Spain and it’s safe to say they blew us away. Much like Royal Blood and The White Stripes, the brothers manage to make an incredible sound for two band members. With multiple layers to their music, they are a spectacle to watch and listen to and we highly recommend that if you’re debating which opening party to go to, you choose this one!
Corella – Meet the North – 5th May
Without doubt the most innovative, exciting band playing the Saturday of the festival is Manchester band Corella. Whilst entirely biased due to our love for the four-piece, they really are a band you must see live to appreciate just how talented they are. Singles Barcelona Girl and Caught Up have brought the guys a lot of success in the last year and their live show goes from strength to strength. We recently saw them on their final date of their headline tour in York to a sell out crowd and rest assured, you will not be disappointed if you go and see them. You can check out our full review of that show right here and find out just why they are a must on May 5th.
Coquin Migale – Meet the North – 5th May
Another band on the incredible Meet the North lineup is Coquin Migale, a band who’ll be hitting the stage in their hometown to a guaranteed capacity crowd. Alex, Stevie, Mark and Josh form probably the most exciting band to come out of Newcastle since Maximo Park and their brand of alt-rock is sure to bring the party on Saturday night. You might have thought you’ve seen the biggest riffs in the UK, but unless you’ve seen this band, you’ve seen nothing yet! In 2017 they played across the country, and despite some injuries and illnesses towards the end of the year, the band are set to have a massive 2018 and Hit the North is going to be just the start. Don’t miss them this festival, go and discover your new favourite band from the North!
JUDAS – Hit the North – 6th May
Whenever a new festival lineup comes out, the first name we look for to decide if we are going or not is without a doubt JUDAS. Both the nicest guys in music, and some of the most talented, the band are the band you have to see at this year’s Hit the North Festival. JUDAS have gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months with the releases of Some People, Ceasefire and recently Big Mouth. Their sound continues to grow and develop and when performing live, are in their absolute comfort zone. Since we first saw the lads a couple of years ago, we have tried to get to every local show and they are yet to disappoint. With major festival experience, playing the main stage at Leeds Festival TWICE!! the band are the ones to watch in 2018 and we can expect big things in the very near future.
The Snuts – Hit the North – 6th May
Completing part one of our big guide to the best artists at this year’s Hit the North, are Scottish outfit, The Snuts. Describing themselves as anthemic indie rock, the West Midlothian band have had great success playing to crowds across Scotland and are ready to take on England. Playing a host of UK festivals this May, the four-piece will be bringing their unique brand of indie to crowds across the North of England, including a stop at Hit the North. We first discovered the band at last year’s Kendal Calling and can honestly say, Spotify hit Glasgow was one of the songs of the weekend. You’d be mad to miss this band on 6th May and if there’s one band we are tipping to make it big in the next twelve months, it’s these.
