It’s still winter in my neck of the woods so a bit of Glitter from Leeds band Purple Thread offers a very welcome bit of sparkle to my speakers. Released on 2nd March, Liz Mann’s vocals have much of the nonchalant hard-arse sass of peak Blondie Debbie Harry, complete with Harry’s richer tone. This is a voice that could go far.
Alongside Mann are a band steeped with solid rock sensibilities; from the slight tongue in cheek bubblegum of The Sweet at their heaviest to the likes of the axe-man killer guitar riff instinct of Guns n Roses and the faux showman pomp of Muse. The guitar work of Jack Tildsley, bass of James Foreman and Ryan Bailey’s drums meld together and the end result is a frantic three minutes of hedonistic attraction; “Do you wanna shine, shine with me baby?”.
Glitter is one of those singalong lose- it- during- the- chorus tracks, and has already been winning the band new friends as it has quickly become a live set favourite. This is a track for anyone into the late 70’s/early 80’s pop/punk movement and who likes their tunes a bit rock heavy.
